CAD Software
CAD (Computer Aided Design) software is designed for use either on a specific CAD system or on a general computer to help individuals and businesses create specific designs (i.e. in product development projects) on a computerised basis. There are basically two primary types of CAD software to consider here:
- 2D CAD software - 2D CAD software allows the user to produce, design and develop designs in a 2D format. These packages basically replace the role of a draftsperson in the design process giving the user the ability to produce 2D drawings and designs via a computer. These systems are often known as vector based drafting packages.
- 3D Cad software - 3D CAD software allows users to produce, design and develop designs in a 3D format. 3D software packages extend the usefulness of 2D formats and allow the user more scope. So, for example, a 3D package may allow a user to produce a design that can be viewed in 'real-life' 3D from all angles. These systems are often known as solid or surface modelling packages.
There are all kinds of 2D and 3D CAD software packages available in the sector today. Some are specifically designed for use by particular industries or design specialists whilst others can be used by any designer. Costs can range from free Internet products through to higher costs for industry specialised products. Common CAD packages include AutoCAD, IntelliCAD and Solidworks.
